The calculation depends on the shape of the property. Rectangular lots only need a length and width, while triangular or irregular lots require additional measurements.
The important part is using the dimensions of the lot itself, not the dimensions of the house, lawn, or another feature inside it.

These examples assume simple rectangular lots. Two properties with the same area can have very different dimensions and shapes.
What does a quarter, half, or full acre mean?
Acreage is an area, not a shape
An acre measures area, not shape. A one-acre property does not have to be a square. If it were a perfect square, each side would be about 208.7 feet long.
Lot dimensions and lot area are not the same thing.
Lot dimensions describe the lengths of the property boundaries. Lot area describes how much land those boundaries enclose.
An 80 ft × 125 ft rectangular lot has dimensions of 80 by 125 feet and an area of 10,000 square feet.
For an irregular property, the boundary may have five, six, or more individual segments. In that case, a single width and depth cannot fully describe the shape even though the property still has one total area.
Real properties aren’t always rectangles.
Length × width works well when a lot is rectangular. But angled property lines, corner lots, curves, and uneven boundaries can make a simple width-and-depth calculation inaccurate.

For a rectangular lot, multiply the length by the width. For example, 80 feet × 125 feet equals 10,000 square feet. Divide square feet by 43,560 to convert the result to acres.

How do I calculate lot size in acres?
Calculate or find the area in square feet, then divide by 43,560. A 21,780-square-foot lot is 0.5 acres, and a 10,000-square-foot lot is about 0.23 acres.

One acre contains exactly 43,560 square feet. In metric units that is about 4,046.86 square metres, or 0.4047 hectares. One hectare is 10,000 square metres.

A quarter acre contains 10,890 square feet. Its dimensions can vary because acreage measures area rather than shape.
